Who is Ulrich Senoner?
Ulrich Senoner, affectionately known as "Zio Ulrich" (Uncle Ulrich), is an architect who made one of the most radical life decisions imaginable. After years of professional work in Berlin, he chose to leave everything behind and return to the mountains of South Tyrol to live in complete harmony with nature.
For over six years, Ulrich has been the only year-round resident at Malga Futura, a remote alpine hut perched at 2,050 meters elevation on the Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi). He survives without electricity, running water, or internet in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.

His daily life is a study in radical simplicity: wood-fired heating, spring water carried by hand, and a rhythm dictated entirely by natural light and the seasons. During winter, Ulrich endures six months of heavy snowfall in complete solitude at altitude.
As a trained architect, Ulrich sees the mountain landscape as living architecture. His hut functions like a camera obscura, where natural light and shadow create a constant perception game that shapes his understanding of space and time.
Ulrich Senoner is the uncle of filmmaker Tobias Demetz, who spent five years documenting this extraordinary existence in the documentary "A Penny Weighs More Than a Soul".
But today, this paradise is under threat. The future of this hermit among the Dolomite peaks remains uncertain.
